On Saturday, September 16, 2017, from 12:00-5:00 p.m., the Anderson Center, along with the Red Wing Public Library and Mackin Educational Resources, will host the 18th Annual Minnesota Children’s Book Festival, which has received national acclaim for its efforts to promote literacy and the joys of reading among young people.
This year’s event features a stellar line-up of Minnesota’s finest, award-winning authors and illustrators: Marion Dane Bauer, H.M. Bouwman, Betsy Bowen, Rick Chrustowski, John Coy, David Geister, Melanie Heuiser Hill, David Huyck, Megan Maynor, Chris Monroe, Bao Phi, Margi Preus, Phyllis Root, Laura Purdie Salas, Kurtis Scaletta, Lauren Stringer, and Stan Tekiela.
The event will offer book sales by Mackin Educational Resources, book signings and readings by authors, presentations and talks by authors and illustrators enjoyable for both children and parents. Also appearing will be the ever-popular balloon-artists David and Heather Olson, Minnesota marble champion Tom Fletcher, stilts with Barebones Puppet Company, a puppet show of “Lupita Doesn’t Want to Sleep” performed in English and Spanish by In The Heart of The Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, and storytelling sessions with the Wonder Weavers storytellers. Other activities include peach basket basketball with John Coy and the Red Wing YMCA, and bookmaking with the Minnesota Center for the Book Arts, The Raptor Center booth featuring an eagle, owl, and falcon, ceramic casting with the Red Wing Pottery Museum, and the perennial festival favorite The Bug Guys.
